About Us

Kengugro Australian-Hungarian Folklore Ensemble presents folk dance, music and song from many regions of Hungary and Transylvania. Inspired by the exciting and varied styles of ancient village dance music and culture, they present a energetic and colourful display of dance, music and song.
After many visits to Hungary and Transylvania the members of Kengugro have been inspired by the passion, skill and emotion of the village dancers and musicians and seek to present this to its audience in a free and spontaneous manner. Leaving behind the dry and predictable folk performance, Kengugro seeks to bring its audience a taste of the true atmosphere and energy experienced in the villages of Hungary and Transylvania.
Kengugro was formed in 1986 and has toured to Hungary as a group in 1987, 1989, 1993 and 2006. At least one or two members have travelled back to or lived in Hungary every year since. By attending folklore seminars and performing at folk festivals, Kengugro's members made new friends, returned with fantastic memories and developed a greater appreciation of Hungarian culture. These trips have also inspired the invitation of teachers and performers to Australia by Kengugro with The Transylvaniacs (Sydney based Hungarian band).
Kengugro has members of both Hungarian and non- Hungarian background. They are drawn to the group by their desire to experience Hungarian folklore and their love and enjoyment of the dance, music and song. Regular contact with Hungary and Transylvania ensure that the culture, music and dance live on in Australia for all to enjoy.
